Simple question for people who own this game... Is this game actually any good? Is it worth the price?

It looks tempting from the video and images on the store page, but I'm a little concerned by the low ratings Tempest has received here at GoG. I refuse to use Steam and as it's an indie production, I'd like to know whether it's still supported here and relatively up to date.

I could care less about multiplayer or LAN options; all I'm interested in is a good single-player game.

Some reviews I've read were critical of a morale system, which I've read elsewhere has since been adapted further. Is this latest adaption the version available here at GoG now?

I've always been a fan of pirate themed games with naval battles, so this does look like one I'd enjoy. I'm just a little uncertain because of the negativity I've seen surrounding the game.
It is a pretty cool game till you doesn't care much about contents. Yes the moral system is a little troublemaker but not that noticeable. Literally if you escape from... or just doesn't engage in 6-7-8 consecutive random encounters your effectiveness will drop. For me it was only a minimal difference but when it comes to boss encounters like krakens, leviathans or those large crabs this minimal difference basically means zero chance winning (you still can escape easily).

Yes, despite the different ships, nice design and lot of equipments the game actually pretty plain. You're sailing from towns to towns, engage in naval battle, and sometimes travels to quest goal places which is one of the previously mentioned two. The expansion pack add ground battle to the game where you control your captain. It makes boarding a little more interesting but the ground location worth nothing at the moment. You get 60 gold from chest which worth as much as 20 sold cannonballs from the lowest quality. At the end of those ground battles you found items similar in quality to the more expensive town items (1000, maybe 2000 gold) but permamently destroyed when your ship sunks.

I have fun with the game but it would be more fun with friends on LAN. That stupid Steam matching server is worth less than nothing.
Thanks for the reply Pityesz.

I get the impression that it's a game that looks pretty, but doesn't have much depth to it... or 'all fur coat and no knickers' as we'd say where I'm from ;)

Perhaps one to take a chance on if both Tempest and the land battle add-on get merged into one package at GoG, or if both appear in an 80% off sale.

I know it sounds like I'm a tightwad, but I'm of the 'once bitten, twice shy' variety, after paying full price for some games that were unfinished or riddled with problems, or just poorly made, that just weren't worth the money.
If you ask me the game and the expansion should be already integrated because the expansion doesn't give back the worth of its cost. It have the charm of the old sailing games like Age of Pirates but as you said it lacks the depth those game had. Let's say it is about continiously being epic, and you will get bored at the moment you are not in fight. :)
