One of the reviews say the game is now no longer possible to play as a trader due to the morale hit you get when you retreat, is it accurate?

Also, can someone please explain to me how soldier combat works? I 've heard two different things about it, one that it is more strategic and one that it is full blown action.

Yes, the game now features a moral system. Running or evading combat, as well losing decrease the crew effectiveness, while winning fights increase it. Moral loss affect your combat effectiveness, I don't know for sure but maybe affects the overall ship performance (such as speed or wind handling). Honestly I can imagine you can trade while having 0 moral but you can't take on stronger NPCs like that. Though there is no unavoidable fight, sometimes it is possible to pirates appear while you're anchored in a port or when you want to travel through region border. Maybe even sea monster can attack you.

The soldier combat is a very simple TPS fight. You control the captain, you can slash with sword, and you can fire your pistol. The other sailors are AI controlled and you set their ranks in the crew distribution screen. It is possible only outside of combat and can not be changed while engaged. It isn't hard to win these just make sure you shred the hostile ship's crew with shrapnel or other high crew damaging weapons. The land combat is a little more troublesome as there is no help and the pirates will fire all of their pistols on you with quite good accuracy. 4-5 hit is enough to kill you while you can't even see where they are. It requires a little experience to know your approach, there is no other way around.

The strategical crew combat was removed and replaced with the TPS fight a long ago by the way.

Thank you very much.
So I assume the game can be played without focusing on any storyline and just trade/fight/plunder? Like a modern version of Pirates! (although that had a time limit).

So, how was the strategic combat before? Turn based?

There is story just some permament quests like defeating a pirate king, finding the princess or such that grants you a permament thing and can't do the quest again. You are free to do anything you want and you can rely on a single thing without caring about anything else. You can trade without moral without losing gold for example. The quests aren't important things, you can ignore them if you want.

The strategic combat was real time. The only control you had was the target picking, or commanding them to stay in cover. Otherwise it was a random fight. The third person fight is a little better as your performance heavily affect the boarding. :)

The Treasure Lands DLC not really gives anything. If I remember right that is the one that changes the boarding combat and that's all. Maybe some new items here and there. Jade Sea makes you able to walk on land and in some towns, as well land quests. Also Jade Sea has a new permament quest where you can rescue a princess. That princess is the second possible captain and you can switch between the original and the woman captain. Both have different stats and bonuses.

If you ask me the two DLC should be merged because separatelly isn't changing that much to make them worth the price.

You're welcome. I like the game but I would love to see a LAN feature that isn't depending on Galaxy. :)

Oh I don't care about multiplayer in most games and when I want them, but they require some form of DRM I just don't get them.

I don't care about general multiplayer either because the communities always kills the feelings. However we come together with the friends to do monthly LAN parties, but unlike UT2004, Jedi Academy or Counter Strike Condition Zero, Tempest has no option for LAN.
