Did you accidentally sell the gleaming ember? If it's not in your inventory when you talk with the quest-giver, then you won't be seen as completing the quest.

In case this happened and you can't get the ember back, here's what you can try:

Odd thing happened with me, I got the ember for him, completed the quest but never got the reward... like I got the fame, the XP even leveld up but no reward...

So I don't know... My best guess is that you might have sold the ember by accident..
