I haven't played a ton of Torchlight, so I don't know exactly the best way to go about this, but I think it could potentially be fun to have a melee/ranged hybrid class, or rather, to build this potential into the existing Vanquisher class.

The idea is to make it viable to spread out stats between str, dex, and def. I get the general impression that unmodded melee Vanquisher is fairly hopeless, in that all such skills are utility at best.

To make hybrid workable, the Multiple Stat Attributes Lite mod looks to me like a small step in the right direction, but I think in particular, a hybrid Vanquisher mod could include a skill that increases STR by X% while wielding a gun, and increases DEX by X% while wielding a blade. Whether this should be a new skill, or if it should just be tacked on to Dual Wield, I'm not sure. I also don't know if this is the sort of thing that can be modded easily.

The other thing Dual Wield could do is have a damage bonus when a sword is equipped, and an attack speed bonus when a gun is equipped. The synergy could compensate for spreading out stat points, though I suppose one could still spend everything on just DEX and hold a sword in the offhand just for the bonus.

I'm not sure what would truly promote hybrid play. Maybe Stab could have high scaling damage and a long cooldown; more realistically for the time period, I guess the ranged skills should have the high damage and high cooldowns, but I don't know if this would be any better or worse for balance.

Anyway, I don't know. The idea is to leave ranged play alone while opening up this other option, but it doesn't sound easy.
