Here is a Link to the mantis discussion. There has been a patch out for about a day now, 8.001. If you can't even open the game to download it then you can use the link in the last post on the mantis page.

Thanks for the link! Since GOG doesn't have its own version of the v8.000 main patch, do you know if there a manual link to that patch? I could only find the v8.001 patch on that site, but it looks that patch requires the v8.000 patch first which I can't find.

I just extracted the 8001 zip into the AIWarGame folder and it appears to work just fine. I left the game at whatever the gog installer default is (7.061 i think?). After extracting the 8001 patch, the game started just fine and displayed 8.001 up in the corner. I started a game and it didn't spit out errors at me.

Well, I am sorry to report that after applying the update I am still experiencing crashes on launch in both the HB and GoG versions. Sometimes the last few lines are about Steamworks failing to load, sometimes it just ends without any indication of any error, beyond of course it ending.
